CREATED FOR CREATORS
(Sumi pens are made to order so please allow 1-2 weeks before dispatch)
Why do we have to buy several different pens to do different jobs? A rollerball for writing, a felt-tip for sketching a fineliner for detailed drawings, you get the idea. Most of these pens are cheap and disposable and aren’t really worthy of the work you create... enter stage left, The Sumi - Creator Pen.
It’s one beautifully balanced and considered pen which allows you to write, draw, sketch and doodle to your heart’s content with just a simple change of refill.
The Creator Pen is designed to accept the best refills out there, they’re called euroformat, you can buy them anywhere and they have the best ink capacity and are made by some of the finest pen makers like Montblanc and Monteverde.
The biggest benefit to this refill is that it comes in a plethora of styles and colours and after 3 years of testing I have curated a selection of my favourites all of which are great friends with the Creator Pen including:
- The Schmidt 5888, A lovely smooth rollerball for writing, often credited as the best available by pen enthusiasts.
- The Pilot Frixion, An erasable ink refill. This blew my mind the first time used it. Similar to a biro in style but with added benefit that you can erase it with a special rubber. It rubs out so well it’s like nothing was there in the first place.
- The Schmidt 6040, fineliner refill has a soft spring-loaded nib for great control. It's a joy to sketch, or illustrate with and is also perfectly suitable for writing.
-
Schmidt 5020 Felt tip, This is hands-down my favourite refill. It has an incredibly dark and smooth ink and by varying the amount of pressure it works just like a brush pen. Highly recommended!
- Schmidt 5285, The extra fine needle-point tip is perfect for drawing or writing alike.

Now onto the pen itself, the finish is buttery smooth so it feels lovely in the hand, with just right amount grip for it not to feel slippery. The form gives a nod to the heritage of a classic quill and ink set whilst being infused with the aesthetics of Japanese minimalism. (hence the name Sumi which means ‘ink’). The making of the pen is a different story, and is firmly rooted in the 21st century. By using state of the art CNC watchmaker’s lathes I can tweak and refine balance and weight to the 0.1 of a millimetre which has allowed be to create a supremely refined and well balanced pen.
It’s my hope the Sumi - Creator Pen will inspire you to do your best work and give you a sense of the endless creative possibilities we have!
Happy Writing.
